Motivational Evening at Katsuya Dubai Mall: Media in the Making

I was delighted and honored to be invited to a social event hosted by the lovely Anita Buys at the newly opened Katsuya restaurant in Dubai Mall. The dinner event brought together 15 career-driven women from alternative areas and saw us conversing over many interesting and media-relevant topics. I must say that my favorite topic of discussion that evening was the one involving comparison between journalists and bloggers. Being a blogger and journalism student myself, I constantly face the dilemma of choosing between being a full-time blogger or journalist. As I’m still unsure which one of those career paths will open more doors for me. Listening to views from more experienced media professionals and bloggers definitely helped give me an extra insight into both worlds.

Prior to this amazing evening at Katsuya Dubai Mall, I have been to this Japanese dining hub with my American friend from LA. My friend who is a big fan of Katsuya and has been to many of their U.S. branches, has been waiting impatiently for the Dubai Mall branch to open. So once I found out that it was officially open, we went there for lunch on their first official opening day. I’ll be writing a review on that great lunch that I had with my friend Nia on that first opening day soon. So stay tuned for that.

In the end, I would like to thank the lovely and dynamic Anita Buys for organizing and hosting this event. Special thanks to the friendly and welcoming team at Katsuya Dubai Mall for their warm and generous hospitality that evening.

Signing off with a note to say that all dreams are achievable and that everything is possible with a little bit of determination, hard work and optimism. Add to that: a lot of patience 🙂

Personal Post: Revealing the Mystery behind this Lifestyle Blogger

Ironically, as I sit to write this post at a cafe in the JBR Walk, at a table nearby sits a family from my country. They remind me of the life that i had left behind in the summer of 2009…a decision that I take pride in making – despite all the challenges, confusions and compromises that came with it.

Today’s post is a sequel to my previous personal post about my lonely single life…it is also the first in a series of personal posts that I aim to publish on a weekly basis as part of my new blogging schedule. I would like to start by thanking everyone who commented on that post and expressed their concern by sharing their views and opinions from personal experiences. Your care and support is highly appreciated and I’m truly blessed to have loyal and genuine fans and friends.

Publishing that post actually helped me greatly in understanding some of the reasons behind my single status at this age (check my About page for a clue). The answers came from my supportive followers, and they clarified a lot of the confusion surrounding this topic. Basically, the comments and discussions brought to my attention a very important point; the fact that I need to sort out my own life before I can be ready for any commitment. What this means is that prior to thinking about being in a serious relationship with anyone, I need to achieve some personal career goals and reach more advanced levels in the personal, career and financial areas of my life.

This is not to say that I have been lounging around the house (or city in my case) for the past couple of years. I simply chose to change careers into a not so easy field – journalism – at a not so great time – world recession. Add to that, my illusions and high expectations of thinking that I had super powers and would be able to reach that goal without going back to school!

Fast forward four years later and endless trails and errors, I enroll at University to take an undergraduate course in journalism.

A decision that I am proud to take.

Now how is getting a degree in journalism and becoming successful relate to my single status? Simply said, getting a degree from an International University and then aiming to become successful career wise and financially should inevitably attract the right kind of men my way. Plus, when I’m more happy and comfortable in my own skin, I will undoubtedly emit positive vibes that will attract decent and successful men, not push them away…

So for now, focusing on my education and blog seem to be the right thing to do, for various reasons.

Not that I had been doing anything different really…I just wanted to write this post as a justification for my obsessive compulsive blogging behavior and to provide a clear explanation for my followers and friends!

The next time you find me preoccupied with my next blog post, or glued to my i-phone updating my blog’s Facebook Page, you’ll understand that I now have legitimate reasons for my compulsive blogging habits. And you will realize the long-term vision and reasoning behind my eternally “busy” state of mind!

Another enlightening conversation that I recently had with my American friend who labels me as “blog crazy” confirmed the comments from my followers on the subject…while in the Arab and Eastern culture generally, it’s agreed on that the man’s role in the relationship is to provide for the family, this is definitely not the case in the Western social system. My friend summed it up as: “what can you bring to the relationship?”. And that is exactly the missing element in my story. Since I come from a Middle-eastern background, I was always accustomed to having my father support me throughout the different stages of my life. Yes, I was working at some point when I was living in Saudi, and at that time I was capable of supporting myself. But once I have decided to change careers, things have taken a different turn.

Many people have told me to take it easy and to “not blog too much” or “work too hard”, but without knowing the main goals behind my commitment, they can’t be blamed, can they?

Apart from finding a partner and realizing my career goals, becoming financially independent will help me detach from my family. Which is one of the main goals of my life. Why would I want to do that, you may ask…I think we can leave that for another post 🙂

Will I progress from being a somewhat pampered and spoiled GCC born and raised brat to the successful and financially independent journalist and blogger that I aspire to be?

At least when I finally reach my goal and realize my dream, I can proudly and firmly say that I did it all by myself…and most importantly; that along the process, I managed to live two widely and extremely diverse lives…

Random Post: The Killers at Sandance, Physical and Emotional Exhaustion and Overall Chaos!

As I sit to write this post while sitting at my favorite cafe, I can feel the rapid pulse of my heart beat as I place my left index finger on the side of my neck. Yes, I’ve always been a weirdo and I tend to do silly things in public too!

Where have I been?

I must start by apologizing for not writing in such a long time. As many of you know by now, I have just started an undergraduate journalism course at a University in Dubai. Since I’ve decided to put this degree as a priority, blogging had to wait until I had the time for it once I was done with my assignments, University hectic commute and daily house errands.

I’m glad that I took the time off (unintentionally) though, as the break allowed me to reflect on my blogging ways and revise my strategy a little bit…well, more like go back to what I was doing when I first started this blog a little over a year ago. But I’ll leave that for you readers to discover 🙂

The Killers at Sandance Gig

At the time of planning this post, I had just gone to The Killers concert at the ever-popular Nasimi Beach and so this topic was in my notes for this blog post. The ironic thing about this show was that my British friend Lianne had told me about it way back in Ramadan…and when I told her that I wasn’t sure of who ‘The Killers” were, she played a music clip from her phone with one of their famous songs. For some reason, I assumed that “The Killers” were a British band and that I would be having an authentic British experience with a group of cool Brits (my friend Lianne and her friends).

Then while standing at the show with my new cool group of British expat friends, I explain my excitement to one of the members of the group, only to find out that The Killers are actually an American band from Las Vegas, Nevada!

That didn’t change the thrilling factor of the experience. As I still managed to have a great night with my British friends. Plus, being a fan of indie/alternative rock music meant that I still sang along and enjoyed most of the songs that were played that night. The Killers’ music style reminded me a lot of the band Green Day; one of my favorite bands that I used to listen to as a teenager.

Exhausted!

When I first started my course at University, I was trying my best to keep the blog and my usual active lifestyle going as much as I could. This however proved to be so draining as the semester went on and we started to have assignments to hand in. As much as I enjoyed attending all sorts of social and work related events and meetups, I now realize that I must keep it to a minimum if I wish to maintain my sanity and health!

It certainly isn’t an easy task trying to juggle all of the following at the same time:

Attending University classes and working on assignments.
Attending main social and work related events and other meetups.
Going for blog reviews, topics and writing posts.
Updating my Facebook Page (glad to discover scheduled posts!).
Following the world news and current affairs (on TV and radio) to be able to get at least one answer right at the Media Law and Ethics weekly news quiz :s
Attempting to read my current book on successful blogging.
Grocery shopping and other essential errands.
Housework chores (washing dishes, laundry, ironing clothes…)
Catching up with friends and making sure that I don’t disappear from the real world 😉

Revised Priorities

In a desperate attempt to save what’s left of my pride and self-integrity…

I will no longer push myself to attend social or work related events when I’m not in the mood for it or lack the required energy and stamina for socializing in a decent manner with other individuals!
I will put working for my journalism course first and everything else will come after that.
I will not bother much about giving my business card to new people and telling them about my Facebook page. Mainly because most will only store the card somewhere and will never put in the effort to type the name of my Facebook Page in the search box to check it out.
I will pay more attention to spending time with friends and the people who matter.
I will allocate more ‘me-time’ and try to relax with much-needed spa treatments and movie nights!

My Halloween Weekend

I plan to spend my long weekend doing low-key activities namely: lounging by the beach and reading, going to the cinema, having dinner with friends and getting a rejuvenating massage.

I will not dress up for Halloween or attend any parties…because I’m too tired to go shopping for a costume or dress up for the occasion! Yes, as you can tell I am seriously exhausted and could use a short break from an active social life.

Since this post is dragging for too long, I decided to leave some other topics for next time.

Career Life: Barajeel Bloggers Lounge Meetup :)

Let me start by giving you a short history about my meetup.com story. Before living in Dubai, I didn’t know what meetup was. A few friends that I met in Dubai told me about it and were suggesting that I join the site to meet new people and make new friends. But since I was and still am on a journey of changing careers and trying to become financially independent, meeting new people and making new friends wasn’t exactly at the top of my priority list. Thankfully, I find it easy to meet new people and make friends without needing to join a social networking site for that.

Then, I read about The Dubai Writers’ meetup group in a magazine and decided to join them and attend their meetups! You can read about that here. My meetups with that group didn’t last for long though. And since then, I haven’t joined or attended another meetup.

That changed today when my dear friend from the blog What I Just Love told me about the Barajeel Bloggers Lounge meetup group. Which is a newly launched group created to bring together bloggers from the city of Dubai in an effort to exchange ideas and discuss blogging tips and tools.

It was my first meetup with the group. And I must say that we had a very interesting and engaging discussion. We all had different ideas to share, and everyone was happy to contribute and talk about their personal blogging experience. Meetups are always a great opportunity to meet like-minded people who share your passions, interests, goals and aspirations.

Honestly, I look forward to our next meetup and I would recommend this meetup to any bloggers in the area who are interested in sharing and discussing ideas.

I must admit, that although It may have taken me a while to learn the right way to do things in an international city like Dubai, I’m glad that I have found the path eventually. I’m also greatly thankful to the Universe and GOD for bringing the events and people that are relevant to my goal closer to me. And for constantly reminding me that I’m not alone in this challenging, yet fun and exciting ride.

Undefined Declarations is Moving to a New Home!

My blog will be moving to a new domain name soon. As you all know, it’s essential to have a (.com) domain name in order to be taken seriously in the business world. And although this blog has been standing strong all this time without any sponsorship of any kind – and will continue to do so with your support – this step must be taken sooner or later for the blog to be more successful and reach a greater amount of readers.

The Carnival of Weekend Wanderings – Undefined Declarations Edition

First of all, I must apologize for the delay in writing and publishing this post. My hosting date is today, but I think I should have posted earlier in the day. But when you get used to the “working from home -or in my case – cafe blogger lifestyle”, you can’t help but organize your daily schedule to fit yourself and yourself only! And when you have a lot of things running in your mind and phone calls that you need to make, then writing this post comes right after lunch 🙂

So in between calling up the exam center to inquire about my IELTS test this weekend, preparing for a private professional photo shoot scheduled for next week, booking my salon hair appointment for the shoot, and making sure that I regularly update my Facebook Page, I present to you my personal edition of the Carnival of Weekend Wanderings.

I was first introduced to the carnival by the gracious blogger Grace from Sandier Pastures, who is currently on holiday (more of a so-called holiday as you will learn from her most recent post). This carnival simply gives you insight into what other bloggers have been up to in their weekends, and shares their fun weekend stories.

The Animated Nomad tells us his story of how he met the musical artist Noush Like Sploosh at The Lime Tree Cafe in Dubai. Impressive I must say! You can read all about it here.

Taking a Short Break.

Dear blog readers and followers,

As you may have noticed, I haven’t written any new posts for a while. It’s not that I haven’t done anything interesting in the past week or so, or am suffering from writer’s mind blockage or apathy or anything like that. Mainly, I haven’t been feeling too well for the past few weeks. That was due to the weather change and to me doing too many things and not getting enough rest. That’s why I decided to take a short break from blogging and the whole rat race (as people call it). Mind you, I still managed to check out a newly opened cafe in my area (to maybe write a review about it), and I had to keep checking and responding to my e-mails, and of course my Facebook page. I also continued to post stuff on that page in an effort to keep things going. Even when I wasn’t feeling too good myself.

But I believe that something good comes out from everything that happens to us in our lives…Taking a short break helped me reflect on my priorities in life and maybe add some balance into other areas of my life. For the past couple of years, due to personal circumstances, I have been focusing mostly on my career. And since that hasn’t been going too well for me, I think it’s time to re-arrange my priorities in life. I’m not saying that I will write less blog posts or put in less effort into my career path (because I’m not even sure I can do that after all this time and effort that I’ve invested in that area), I just plan to put in more effort into other places that I might have neglected all those years in my search for financial and personal freedom and independence.

What are those other areas you might ask? well, I will leave that for you to figure out. I think it’s easy to know what they are once you read my about page and find out some simple facts about me and my personal life.

One main positive thing that came out from this short break and the connection with other blogger friends was to realize that we should not loose ourselves in our chase for material or success-related goals. We should always be reminded that life is a game and we should have fun while playing it. We should stay grounded and stay true to our selves. We should keep our sense of self-integrity and keep our standards high no matter how bad the going gets tough.

Most importantly, we should try to always help others along the way when we can.

Finally, I would like to mention that a few things need to be revised in my blog. Mostly concerning the topics that I write about. I have driven myself into extreme stress and exhaustion by trying to cover as many interesting topics as I could. And the time has come for that to end.

The Ultimate Blog Party!

Thanks to Sandier Pastures helpful and entertaining posts, I found out about The Ultimate Blog Party. Which is basically a virtual gathering for all types of bloggers from around the world. It’s an opportunity to meet new bloggers, discuss relevant topics, and of course drive more traffic into your blog. The party also includes online live events on Twitter and Google+ for any one interested to join. The first step in joining the blog party is to simply write a party post about yourself and your blog, and then add the link to the list of blogs under the matching category for your blog topic.

So, here’s a brief about me and my blog:

My name is Nada, I’m originally from Saudi Arabia and I live in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I started this blog in September of last year and I have been blogging regularly since then. I like to consider myself a lifestyle blogger. I mainly write about daily life events and stories. Mostly, I cover various types of events taking place in my city; Dubai. These events could range from art or fashion exhibitions, live music shows, publishing related events, or self-development seminars and talks.

The main reason I started this blog was to advance my writing skills and add more credibility to my CV and profile as a writer. I have been on a long journey to change my career path and shift my entire life and lifestyle for the past five years and this blog reflects this journey and my thoughts and trials and lessons learned throughout it. My main goal is to become financially independent as a writer and a blogger. Since I love what I do and I want to continue writing for the rest of my life! Through blogging, I also get to attend a lot of interesting events and meet great and exciting new people.

I always felt like I was a creative person, and working in IT support when I was living in Saudi Arabia surely didn’t match my creative flair. Nor did my college major in Business Information Systems. But I believe that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and follow your passion. Even if there are many obstacles along the road and unexpected challenges.

My journey started when I moved to London to take a course in Fashion Media and Communication at the prestigious London College of Fashion. Followed by moving to Dubai three years ago, where I continued to pursue my new career path and aim for an editorial role in publishing. I’m still working towards that goal in addition to my new-found passion: blogging. Ideally, I would like to get paid for what I write in both my personal blog and in print. I’m not sure how long the road ahead of me is, but what I’m certain of is that I’m enjoying every second of my journey and learning experience.

On a more personal note (yes, believe it or not; the above wasn’t personal enough!), I’m also enjoying the simple freedoms that my new life in Dubai has to offer. Growing up and living most of my life in Saudi, to relatively over-protective and controlling parents meant that I had to argue and fight my way into many simple things. And believe it or not, I still do! Yes, the fight to be free is an endless one when you are Saudi. But at least these days, I don’t have to convince my parents to go to a music concert or party. I can simply buy my tickets and head to the venue!

Although I call myself “The Rebellious Saudi Diva” on my about page, most people around the world will understand that the description is only relevant to my personal background and Saudi culture.

I think I’ve said enough about myself and my blog for now. I hope that you will find my posts interesting and entertaining. And that you will continue to support my journey by following my blog and liking my Facebook page (the link can be found on my blog’s home page)!

I’m on the Cover of Weekend Tabloid!

I had done the photo shoot for this article and had answered some questions about myself and my blog a few weeks ago. And for the past three weeks or so I had been getting Gulf News newspaper every Saturday to check “The Weekend Tabloid!” supplement for the article that I would be featured in. Today, I had a follow-up appointment with the doctor for my cold and general fatigue minor illness. My plan was to later head to the nearby grocery store to get some stuff and the paper where my article might be published, since it was Saturday.

I was sitting at Starbucks having a grande mint tea (in an effort to prevent further developments of my sudden weakness). I was actually feeling tired, and disappointed that the mint tea bags used for my tea were the type that you could get at your local supermarket and not the same one I had tried the last time I ordered a mint tea at Starbucks. So there I sat, contemplating the inconsistency of service in restaurants and other service providers in general in this country. But I can’t complain much, as I am from Saudi where the service is even worse and the consistency almost non existent. I was just not feeling too well and upset that the tea I had been looking forward to all day turned out to be just a commercial brand off the shelf. I was also thinking to myself that I should go up and speak to the barrister and voice out my concern about the tea bag used in my tea. But I just couldn’t be bothered. Then I was sitting there talking to a friend on the phone, who wanted to meet up. I explained to him how I had pending work to do. More specifically, blog posts that I need to write. I told him how I still have posts about my two last days in Hong Kong that I still didn’t get the time to write about. Yes, my Hong Kong trip was last Christmas and I still haven’t finished writing about it!

His answer was a simple: “well, you don’t have to write everything in detail. It’s not like you’re making money out of it.”

That statement brings us to the core of this post. As you can see in the above image that the headline of the article that I was featured in reads: “Blogging pays”. And although I have not reached the point in my blogging journey that started last September, where I can say that I have generated income from my blog, I must admit that as long as I enjoy doing what I’m doing, and that I have the luxury to practice my passion and do something that I genuinely love for a living, then I’m sure that the material gain will follow at some point in my journey.

Right now, I am exploring my new found love of blogging and enjoying every minute of it. So as long as I feel rewarded in a spiritual way, then I will continue doing what I love doing best. Because I believe that the knowledge and life experiences and lessons learned from my journey are much more valuable than any monetary income or revenue.

So after that phone conversation, I get up to check today’s paper for the article that I would be featured in – one of those Saturdays – and to my surprise, I see my picture on the cover of the paper! later on, I see it on the cover of the issue of the weekend supplement as well! I quickly snap some photos before running back to my place to post them on my blog’s Facebook page. Which I highly recommend that you “like” if you still haven’t done so. I do post various stuff on that page, apart from my blog posts. So you must check it out and see for yourself.
